Nothing jars in this community, which has a buzz about it, but with a contemplative feel too, as befits its creators”.

With 30% of the UK’s energy use at household level, produced mainly through heating and hot water, sustainable housing is becoming an increasingly important topic with many speaking of the urgent need to improve our housing stock to save energy, cut CO2 and reduce our carbon footprint.

One such housebuilder which has the key elements of sustainable construction at its heart is Keepmoat Homes, gold winner at last week’s prestigious What House? Awards ceremony.

Taking the Sustainable Developer of the Year title, Keepmoat Homes has a strong commitment to sustainability, announcing last week that it achieved its highest score to date under the NextGeneration benchmark, which measures a company’s sustainability performance, propelling the housebuilder to fifth place in the 2011 sustainability rankings.

Investment Watch: Thailand tops October as investors turn to apartments

Forget Spain, France, Florida and the other usual suspects of overseas property, this time it was the turn of Thailand to take the top spot in TheMoveChannel.com’s monthly Investment Watch.

The report, which charts the level of interest in the overseas property portal’s listings, saw a condo in Pattaya attract the most enquiries In October. What was it about the luxury Thailand apartment that triggered such a torrent of attention?

The popularity of Pattaya’s property may seem surprising after Thailand’s extensive flooding, but investors were attracted to the resort a matter of days before the tragic event took place. The demand for the luxury coastal condos, located 600 metres from the beach, actually foreshadowed industry predictions, as Colliers International Thailand suggested that the water-damaged homes would lead to a rise in interest in condominiums.

Indeed, apartments attracted the most attention from investors in October, accounting for 6 out of the 10 most popular properties on the site. Closely following Thailand’s condos were flats in Cumbria and new apartments in Spain, but each were driven by different investment needs.

The Spanish apartments show the continuing demand for seaside property in the popular region of Murcia. The new build properties, located close to Murcia’s airport and the upcoming Paramount Theme Park, are a traditional lifestyle buyer choice, eligible for a 50 per cent discount in VAT until the end of the year.

But apartments are also strong opportunities for buy to let investment. Cumbria’s two-bedroom flats (promising 9 to 11 per cent gross yields) were a familiar runner-up to Thailand, dropping one place in popularity after drawing the most enquiries on TheMoveChannel.com in September.

As rents in the UK are revealed to be the highest in Western Europe, buy to let apartments remain a secure form of investment. London-based accommodation, in particular, has the highest rental rates on the continent, with Westminster hotel units holding a firm fourth position in October’s chart.

Istanbul also had apartments to offer investors last month, as Turkey’s booming economy and high student housing demand combined to attract the sixth-highest number of enquiries for Kucukcekmece’s one-bedroom flats. Other non-eurozone markets also demonstrated their appeal, as investors considered properties as diverse as Hungary homes in the heart of Budapest to apartments in Bulgaria’s cheap ski resorts.

Half-price apartments in Egypt’s Hurghada resort were equally popular in seventh place, providing below market value real estate to investors tightening their purse strings. But with buy to let opportunities both in the UK and overseas and new condos in Thailand cheaper than repossessed homes, October proved that apartments remain a popular form of investment, come hell or high water.

Brits account for 1 in 6 Turkish properties sold to foreign buyers

Recent findings have shown that around 1 in 6 Turkish properties sold to foreign buyers were bought by Brits in the last two months.

The Land Registry Directorate General’s most recent statics highlight that 113,687 properties across Turkey are now owned by foreigners, an increase of 2,487 property sales made on September’s 111,200 figures.

Further data shows that Brits are still the biggest foreign buyers of Turkish property, with 25,177 properties now owned by British citizens, an increase of 329 since September 2011.

Meanwhile, the value of homes in Turkey increased by an average of 0.81% last month compared to September according to the REIDIN.com monthly property index with economic powerhouse Istanbul topping the average figure, increasing by 0.88%.

Indeed, those who have invested in Turkish property for rental purposes will be happy to hear that rental values have also increase between September and October this year rising by 1.07% with rents in Istanbul pushing up by 1.26%

The Berkeley Group scoop 12 awards at the prestigious What House? Awards 2011

The Berkeley Group, Britain´s leading urban regenerator and well respected housebuilder based in Cobham, Surrey has taken home 12 awards at this year’s prestigious What House? Awards.
 

Unveiled last week at the 30th annual awards ceremony The Berkeley Group was presented with a selection of awards spanning a number of categories with Rupert Bates editorial director of whathouse.co.uk commenting,

The dedication to sustainable urban regeneration by The Berkeley Group saw them take silver for Sustainable Developer of the Year thanks to “92 percent of their homes being built on Brownfield Land and their commitment to the Lifetimes homes principle in its design” as explained by the judges.
 

Other silver accolades were presented to Berkeley for Best Large Housebuilder and Best Development which both highlighted The Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich as an example of “best practice in the regeneration of listed buildings” as well as receiving an award for Best Exterior Design for Park Crescent at Kingsbrook Park, a charming Georgian-style crescent in a historic cathedral city that has been “designed in sympathy with its Georgian predecessors” but with the “added benefit of modern technology, furnishing and finishing”.
 

In addition, St James took the Best Interior Design silver prize for Queens Acre. Also voted Best House, judges were impressed by the décor executed by Alexander James Interior Design which was described as “elegant and restrained throughout, with especially good use of textured wallpapers, tactile fabrics and quality materials”. This category also saw Berkeley Homes win bronze for The Target Living Collection, a collection of eight three-bedroom mews houses occupying the West Range of The Armouries at the Royal Arsenal Riverside development in London, praised for its clever space planning making the homes appear “significantly larger” given each property is only just over 1000 square feet.
 

Meanwhile, Berkeley Homes also received a bronze award for Best Starter Home which acknowledged Victory Pier on the Medway in Gillingham, an attractive waterfront development, as a “perfect example of a scheme guaranteed to appeal to the first-time buyer market”.
 

The Best Renovation bronze accolade went the Berkeley Homes for All Saints, Eastbourne, East Sussex, a Grade II listed, Victorian Gothic hospital which has been successfully converted from “institutional to residential use while maintaining the cohesive feel and distinctive atmosphere of the buildings” while the Best Brownfield Development bronze award was picked up by Berkeley Homes for transforming Caspian Wharf in London, a former polluted, industrial site into 543 high-specification units which represents a “model of inner-city regeneration”.
