Spain reigns supreme as leading tourist destination with Irish visitors increasing by 20%

As Spain continues to attract a growing number of overseas visitors, recent figures show that the first two months of 2016 saw 7.2 million international tourists visit the popular Mediterranean destination, a 12.5% increase in comparison to the same period last year. According to the latest Survey of Tourist Movements in Frontera (Frontur), released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), it was those arriving from Ireland that stood out, with a significant increase of 20.2% over the course of last year.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) recently reported the total number of international trips made by Irish residents between December 2015 and February 2016 increased by 7.7% when compared to the year before, with Spain ranking second only to the UK in relation to destination choice. This growing interest in Spain is now also beginning to transfer across to the second home market, with leading Spanish homebuilder Taylor Wimpey España experiencing a substantial rise in Irish enquiries.
